Most people don’t get married on a regular basis, so the process of hiring vendors and how it all works might be a little confusing. Here’s a quick run down of what will happen once you get in touch with True North Photography.


Contact us by phone, email or if you prefer, fill out the contact form on the website. Initially all we need is some basic information about your event. We will check the date of your wedding to see if we are available – if not, we’ll let you know quickly, so you can find someone who is. If we are available, great! We then organise a time for a first meeting which is usually coffee and a chat.


At the meeting we discuss your wedding timeline and photography-related priorities, so that on your day we deliver everything you expect. An hourly based price can be used for anything outside of the package inclusions. This gives you the freedom to add time, requests or simply fine tune your package to suit. We also take this opportunity to discuss any ideas or questions you might have and generally just get to know each other. We like to ensure everyone feels comfortable and often a verbal commitment to proceed is given at this initial meeting.


Within a few days you will be sent a pdf of our client/photographers agreement. This is a standard agreement protecting both parties. You can look over the terms and see if you have any additional questions or changes you’d like to make. Once the agreement is finalised and signed we will require a non-refundable 30% deposit. Receipt of this deposit effectively reserves our services for your wedding date. Awesome you're on your way!


Fast forward! It’s 1 week before your wedding. Already? Where did the time go?! At this point we’ll make contact and go over all the final details. It’s a good idea to have a written timeline you can email through at this stage. If you have a specific family shot list please designate someone responsible to organise family on the day. Obviously we won’t know who ‘Uncle Bob’ is from your list, so it's best to be prepared. Final payment is also required at this point and all remaining funds need to be cleared prior to the wedding date.


Try to relax and enjoy your day knowing you’re in good hands. We are there for you, your partner and all your guests. We'll be your eyes capturing all the excitement and emotions of the day.


Within 4 weeks, a full set of photos will be posted online for your private viewing. These images are protected with a password that you can choose to share with friends and family for all to enjoy. We’ll also send you the boxed USB. The USB contains all your edited images in both hi-resolution and web friendly sizing. You’re free to print from these digital files as often as you wish. If you prefer, you can also order albums or prints through True North Photography.

 Just a sample of the most frequently asked questions regarding our services. Hopefully these go some of the way to addressing your queries too.

Is the initial consultation free of charge?

Yes of course. We need to ensure that both parties feel comfortable before proceeding. Its also a great opportunity to show you some of our sample books in the flesh.

How long before we see our images?

Generally you’ll see the proofs of all you images within 4-6weeks. After the wedding, we transfer and open all the images taken on the day. We remove duplicates, out of focus shots, or any images that we deem unusable. The rest are ready for editing. Our editing style is quite natural and restrained. Things such as contrast, white balance and colour correction are rendered at this stage. We do not engage in major Photoshop work, however we’re more than happy to remove any unwanted blemishes. Photo editing is very time consuming and is a specialised process necessary to achieve the best possible results from the RAW negatives. It’s worth the wait.

Do I need a ‘Shot List’?

No, you won’t need a shot list for the day. We shoot in a photo-journalistic style which lends itself to capturing the candid moments and seeing the day unfold naturally. We do however recommend a family photo list for formal portraits after the ceremony. This way we can work through the list without forgetting anyone important.

How do you ensure the best light?

We always start by looking at sunset times forecast for the day and work backwards from there. Keeping the last hour and a half of the day dedicated to your portraits will give you the most flattering and beautiful light of the day (aka the golden hour). When planning your ceremony, allow for enough time afterwards to greet your guests and take a few special family portraits, this can take around 20-30 minutes. Ceremonies taking place outdoors also look best out of the midday sun. Any time after 2:30pm is usually best to avoid the heat and unwanted harsh shadows.

What sort of gear do you use?

The most expensive camera equipment doesn’t necessarily equate to good photography. It’s all about the skill and creativity of the photographer that counts. Rest assured, we only use full frame Canon digital bodies and lenses. All editing is performed on colour calibrated Apple computer equipment and Adobe software. Coupled with creativity, skill and an eye for detail, you won’t be disappointed.

Are you able to travel interstate/overseas?

We travel all the time, and we’ll go anywhere; our passports are ready. We’re always thrilled at the chance to work in new locations. We will need you to cover some of our travel expenses; for overseas weddings we can offer you special rates to make things much more affordable.

Once we've booked, do we speak to you much before the wedding?

Of course! We’re always available to chat and help you with any concerns or ideas you have. We love to stay in touch with our clients in the lead up to (and after) the wedding day; it’s this connection that helps you to feel comfortable, and helps us to create beautiful and natural photo collections and films.
